High School photography internships are available to any student currently enrolled in a Kansas high school.

General Information:
The student intern must commit to work at least one 3-hour shift at the Kansas State Fair.
The intern will primarily shoot candid photos that showcase the people and activities taking place on the Fairgrounds during the first 2 hours of his or her shift. The last 1 hour of the student's shift will be used to edit photos.
Recognition and Awards:
People’s Choice Award: At the conclusion of the Fair, 20 photos will be selected as candidates for the People's Choice competition. A panel of professional photographers will select the 20 photos to be voted on. The public will have one week to vote for their favorite of those photos. The intern whose photo receives the most votes will receive the People's Choice Award which includes a Champion Rosette and $50. The photo with the second most votes will receive a Reserve Champion Rosette and $25.
Agriculture Photo, Animal: Interns submit one photo depicting an agricultural scene from the Fair (Examples: Competitor with an animal, farm animals/livestock, etc.) The KSF Photo Intern whose Agriculture Photo is selected will have that photo submitted to the International Association of Fairs and Expositions and will receive a Kansas State Fair Rosette and $50.
Agriculture Photo, Non-animal: Interns submit one photo depicting an agricultural scene from the Fair (Examples: horticulture exhibit, operation of farm machinery, FFA or 4-H exhibit). The KSF Photo Intern whose Agriculture Photo is selected will have that photo series submitted to the International Association of Fairs and Expositions and will receive a Kansas State Fair Rosette and $50.
Action Photo: Interns submit one action photo from the Fair (Examples: rides moving/spinning, kids running, animal moving, tractor moving, etc.) Think "implied movement" to avoid blurry photos. The KSF Photo Intern whose Action Photo is selected will receive a Kansas State Fair Rosette and $50.
Food Photo: Interns submit one photo from the Fair showcasing food. Get creative! The KSF Photo Intern whose Food Photo is selected will receive a Kansas State Fair Rosette and $50.
Best Overall Fair Photo: The photography instructor and the Kansas State Fair Education Coordinator will choose the photo they think best showcases the Kansas State Fair. The 1st place Overall Fair Photo will receive a Grand Champion Kansas State Fair Rosette and $50. The 2nd place Overall Fair Photo will receive a Kansas State Fair Reserve Champion Rosette and $25.
Other:
The student must be currently enrolled at a Kansas High School.
The High School Photography Internship applications are listed below. Register by Thursday, September 4th, 2025.
Intern needs to bring a digital camera with at least 15 megapixels and a removable data card. Students are also encouraged to bring their own laptop as the fair has a limited amount to lend for editing.
What the Kansas State Fair will provide: A gate ticket, $5 in meal vouchers, ID badge, and Patron cards. A camera card reader and a limited amount of laptops will be available in the High School Photography Office (located upstairs in the Pride of Kansas Building) for editing the photos for upload to the photo gallery.
