When children have personal interaction with a character from a story, they are more likely to stay interested in reading, and when that character is a horse, the connection is even more. The Black Stallion Literacy Foundation (BSLF) believes and successfully uses that approach to reach more than 330,000 children in nine states since the program’s inception in 2000. The Black Stallion Literacy Foundation was created in 1999 by two childhood friends: Mark Miller, the owner of Arabian Nights Dinner Attraction in Kissimmee, FL, and Tim Farley, son of world-renowned author, Walter Farley. These two combined their passion for horses and a desire to improve literacy to create a revolutionary program for fourth grade students using live horses and classic books by Walter Farley.
Every student in two fourth grade classes selected will receive their own copy of The Black Stallion, each class will receive the movie The Black Stallion, and the students will enjoy a special fieldtrip classroom with a live black Arabian horse at the Kansas State Fair on Thursday September 16th at the Kansas Arabian Horse Show. Teachers will receive a comprehensive curriculum that include a study guide for all chapters in the book that will be a multi-disciplinary project, including reading, art, writing, math, science and even music in the classroom. All 4th grade classes registered to participate in Kansas' Largest Classroom program will be eligible to win.* Register today! *(program is limited to sixty five students)
